How to Keep Your Dog Cool During Hot Weather

Hello, dog lovers! As the temperatures rise, it’s essential to keep our furry friends cool and comfortable. Here at Howlers Doggie Daycare, Hotel & Spa, we want to ensure that every dog stays safe and happy during the hot summer months. Let’s dive into some practical tips and tricks to keep your dog cool when the heat is on.

Hydration is Key

Just like humans, dogs need plenty of water to stay hydrated in hot weather. Make sure your dog has access to fresh, clean water at all times. You can also add ice cubes to their water bowl for an extra cooling effect. Consider carrying a portable water bottle and bowl when you’re out and about.

Avoid the Midday Heat

The sun is at its hottest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so try to schedule walks and outdoor activities for the cooler parts of the day, like early morning or late evening. If you must go out during peak hours, keep the walks short and seek shaded areas.

Cooling Products

Invest in some cooling products designed for dogs. Cooling mats, vests, and bandanas can help regulate your dog’s body temperature. These products often work by absorbing water and using the process of evaporation to cool your dog down.

DIY Cool Treats

Treat your dog to some homemade frozen goodies. You can freeze dog-safe fruits like blueberries and watermelon or make pupsicles using plain yogurt, peanut butter, and chicken broth. These cool treats are not only delicious but also help keep your dog hydrated.

Provide Shade

Ensure your dog has access to a shaded area when they’re outside. A large tree, umbrella, or a specially designed dog tent can provide much-needed relief from the sun. If your dog spends a lot of time in the yard, make sure there’s a shaded spot where they can retreat.

Never Leave Your Dog in a Hot Car

This one’s a no-brainer but worth repeating: never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a short period. Temperatures inside a car can rise rapidly, leading to heatstroke or even death. If you’re running errands, leave your dog at home where it’s safe and cool.

Wet Towels and Cool Baths

If your dog seems overheated, try cooling them down with wet towels or a cool bath. You can place wet towels on their belly, paws, and neck or give them a gentle rinse with cool water. Avoid using ice-cold water, as it can cause shock.

Recognise the Signs of Heatstroke

It’s crucial to recognise the signs of heatstroke in dogs, as it can be life-threatening. Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea, and collapse. If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool area, offer water, and contact your vet immediately.

Final Thoughts

Keeping your dog cool during hot weather is vital for their health and well-being. By following these tips, you can ensure your furry friend stays comfortable and safe all summer long.
